Cashion's Eat Place

I fell in love with Cashion’s Eat Place on a cool fall evening many years ago. It was my first time there. The daily changing menu replete with seasonal produce and bold flavors reminded me of home. So I ordered accordingly – a dish of pork with radishes, hominy and avocado – ingredients I grew up eating. Although my mom’s cooking is my favorite in the world, I still crave that Cashion’s version to this day. I also crave their Veal Sweetbreads, perfectly sautéed and served with Catalan spinach and the spiced rubbed bison sirloin – one of the best in the city. I have had many memorable meals there, and although Anne Cashion has left, Chef John Manolatos is still creating simple, flavorful dishes crafted with beautiful seasonal ingredients and has added some welcomed Greek touches to the menu. Co-owner and general manager Justin Abad oversees the wine list; his friendly and inviting presence is another wonderful staple at Cashion's. On a recent trip there I found a new favorite dish, this time during brunch, it was a summer seafood sausage served with fresh peas and lightly sautéed sweet corn and grape tomatoes – a harmonious combination and the perfect synopsis of summer – it was unforgettable. I wish DC had more restaurants like this one, somewhere with no pretentions, with exceptional, dependable food, an excellent wine list… somewhere that feels like home. I am certainly glad we have this one.

What We Love Here

For Dinner: Veal sweetbreads, heirloom tomato salad with watermelon and feta, any pork dish, spiced-rubbed bison sirloin, and seasonal soft-shell crabs.

For Brunch: Jumbo lump crab cakes with lime and cilantro, Sarah’s cornmeal waffles with maple syrup, applesauce and walnut butter and the bison burger with a poached egg and Hollandaise.

Tips

They feature an excellent late-night menu at the bar Fridays and Saturdays from 12-2.
